first_imgFather-of-thre Garda Tony Golden was shot in cold blood trying to protect a woman who had been attacked.The Donegal public has been left stunned by the murder of a Garda in Co Louth.A book of condolences which was opened today at Letterkenny Garda station in honour of tragic Garda Tony Golden has been signed by the public thought the day.Letterkenny Garda StationA spokesman for Letterkenny Garda station said the response to the book of condolences has been huge.“People have been in here all day signing the book and giving their support to the Gardai which is great to see. “It is just so sad that it comes in such tragic circumstances.“One woman even came in with a tray of buns. It is good to see that the vast majority of people realise that Gardai are just ordinary people trying to do a job to the best of their ability,” he said.Garda Golden was shot in cold-blood as he went to help the partner of dissident republican Adrian Mackin who had been the victim of domestic violence.Garda Golden was responding to a callout when he was fired on at a home in the village of Omeath on the Cooley Peninsula in Co Louth. The father of three, aged in his 30s, entered the house alone and was blasted in the head and killed in the line of duty.He had gone to the house after a distressed woman made a 999 call.When he entered the building he was confronted by Mackin, 24, who had a handgun and opened fire on him.It is understood Mackin then shot himself at the scene.He had already shot his partner, named locally as Siobhan Phillips, who was last night in a critical condition in hospital.
